The phenakistiscope, an animation device that was invented in the 19th century, is considered to be one of the earliest forms of moving media entertainment. It was designed to create an illusion of motion by spinning a disc with sequential images around a central axis and viewing the reflected images through a series of slits on the disc's perimeter. The device was originally named Fantascope and Stroboscopische Scheiben by its creators, but it later became widely known as the Phénakisticope, with varying spellings. This invention was a significant milestone in the history of animation and paved the way for the future motion picture and film industry. Despite its limitations, as it can only display a short continuous loop, the phenakistiscope played a crucial role in the development of animation and visual media, and it remains an important part of media history.
